FrederickRoots* exists to serve as a resource for researching the history of the African American families of Frederick County, Maryland. Particular emphasis is placed upon the small farming communities of the County. Over the years, our work has revealed that most of the families of these communities have their roots in slavery. A primary mission of this site is to trace those roots back to the first slave who was freed, identifying his or her owner, location, and documents of manumission**.

Visualizing Early Baltimore - Visualizing Early Baltimore is a fully three-dimensional, interactive digital model of Baltimore, circa 1815, that provides connections between the past and today. The IRC has been working on various aspects of this digital visualization since 2012, combining historical research with cutting-edge modeling and mapping technologies to re-create an accurate 3D model of the city, its terrain, land use, and buildings in the early 1800s. The Bicentennial of the War of 1812 provided a catalyst and funding for the IRC to use the experience gained from its Visualizing Early Washington, D.C. project to develop this accurate map and 3D depiction of the Baltimore cityscape shortly after the famous bombing of Fort McHenry that inspired the words of the Star-Spangled Banner.

Laurel Cemetery (1852-1957) was Baltimore’s first non-sectarian cemetery for African Americans. A ‘safe’ estimate is that at least 5,000 burials occurred at this site during the years of its formal incorporation. However, more burials were likely as, before its incorporation, the site was used as a burial site for free and enslaved servants. The culmination of a student project, this video provides a brief explanation of the history and significance of this site. Watch and hear of Carroll County's connection to this cemetery.

Prior to 1906, Pennsylvania births and deaths were recorded only sporadically by the counties and some cities such as Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Genealogists must rely on county records or nongovernmental sources such as church registers, gravestone inscriptions and newspapers to obtain data for this earlier period.

SNP Tracker by Rob Spencer. Use the (/) toggle button to choose Y DNA () or mitochondrial (mt) DNA (). Simply type your haplogroup (ideally your terminal SNP) into the input box and click “Go” or hit return. If this SNP is known to the FTDNA Y or mt Tree, the map will show the path from “Y Adam” or “Mitochondrial Eve” to the SNP. You need type only the lower-level code, for example “M222” instead of the full “R-M222”. Y SNP names are as in FTDNA, not the older nomenclature, thus “I-L160” and not “I2a1a1” (although many short ‘classic’ labels will work, like R1a or G2). If what shows at the top-left of the map is different from what you typed, that’s because the tool automatically searches all SNP synonyms and displays the current FTDNA nomenclature. If your haplogroup is missing, then it’s not in the FTDNA Y or mt Tree. .
